Guernsey County Pound Kills All Pitbulls

Nearly 1 month ago the commissioners in Guernsey County held a meeting where they decided that all pit bulls and mixed breed dogs at the pound designated pit bull mix by the warden would be euthanized at the earliest opportunity, which means immediately for owner-surrendered dogs, and after 3 days for strays. Their policy forbids any rescue of these dogs, no exceptions.

In August, 2008 county commissioners drafted a policy with the same essential language, including the ban on rescues, signed by all three commissioners. There is some confusion as to whether this was ever an official policy. No such policy was ever made publicly known, although copies were distributed internally and presented by animal control officers during at least one recent pit bull-related dispute and copies were posted at the pound during August 2009. Allegedly the document was not publicized in local press due to concern that owners would be reluctant to comply with surrender orders if they were aware of a mandatory kill policy.

Some dog owners were previously being told by pound staff that their surrendered dogs might go to rescue or had been rehomed, when the dogs actually had been put down due to pit bull breed status.

Currently the policy drafted last month is being communicated publicly by animal control but has yet to be announced in local press.

If you oppose breed-specific kill policy, contact the Guernsey County commissioners, all three of whom voted for this policy.
